SWEETS TO SLIP |
I missed last Saturday because we were cheese tasting in the Napa Valley and this Saturday it's cold and getting ready to rain. I did take the transplants outside to start to harden off and I cut slips on the sweet potatoes so they can root and then be planted. I just received some nice Japanese popcorn seed, Bloody Butcher Flint corn seed, a nice Indian blue squash seed and 4 different types of tobacco seed (I heard it was really hard to grow and I like a challenge). It will have to warm up a bit before I can plant the corn, squash and tobacco. So for now just some pictures:

We found tabacco easy to grow but hard to control the bugs who riddled every leaf...not even sure what kinds. Pa was hoping to grow his own pipe fixings. Good luck. DEE
I'm jealous! Hardening off plants already, I just planted my tomato seeds although my cabbage, broccoli and caulifower are getting big.
Looking great Lynda! I really need to get some slips growing. I only have about 6 weeks before I can plant outside. It looks like you like to reuse those nursery pots too!
Sweet potato slips are looking good!
I am transplanting to bigger pot's my tomatoes and peppers. My cabbage didn't come up don/t know why.your plants look good. Blessings jane
Your plants look great! I am happy to be your newest follower.
Everything looks so good! I'm truly envious. I'm still waiting for my seeds to sprout in their little peat pots. Your photos are an inspiration.
All of your veggies look great. You are way ahead of me!
Wow, I really must try starting my own sweet potato slips like you are. All your plants are looking great.
I agree with everyone.
We thought about growing tabacco also, just haven't tried yet.
Everything looks super.
It's crazy weather here, 70's one day, 50's the next. Hope the plums & peaches make it!
Have a super day, I'm off to make soap.
P.S.
Have you got those sweet potatoes in mason jars?
Everything looks awesome. You must have two green thumbs! :)
I hope I didn't jump the gun on the tomatoes. My son planted his commercial crop four weeks ago. The weather has been so wet, we're all worried about rot...oh well, so goes the life of a farmer. I'm planting more heirloom tomato seed, just in case...I can always give away plants if I have too many. Yes, I do reuse plant pots...the trays came from Cal Poly (daugher-in-law's project leftovers) and the four inch and 6 inch pots came from Rite-Aid's garbage dumpster! I saw the clerk throwing them out and I was right behind her throwing them in the truck! I think I ended up with over a hundred...that was last year after a heat-wave ruined all of the store's lantana and salvia pots...their loss, my gain.
Terry: Yes the sweet potatoes are in canning jars. I use canning jars for just about everything. I hate plastic, so I use them for leftovers, flower vases, seed storage, button storage, yogurt making, salad dressings, oh yeah: canning!
WOW. Your tomatoes are far bigger than mine. Beautiful.
