Worm Casting Compost Tea!!! |
The garden took a tiny break and just now is producing a bit again. Cucumbers (volunteers..I don't plant cukes, I have no idea where these came from), chard, rhubarb, tomatoes, onion, lots of herbs: oregano, basil, sage, thyme, chives, rosemary, lavender, borage. The volunteer squash had dozens of male flowers...no females...I almost pulled it out: but today when I was watering I found 3 tiny little squashes (Australian Butter). The volunteer melon has a dozen little melons...I'm going thin them when I get back next week. I thinned peaches and crab apples last Sunday...that's a first for me, but I'm hoping to get some nice big peaches and some good looking crab apples. My Granny Smith needs thinned, too...in fact it should have been sprayed...but I don't do that and now every apple in this 30 year old tree has a worm. I'm use them for apple cider this year...I'll cut the worms out and crush with my daughter-in-law's crusher and then press them with her press...can't wait.

I have always dreamed of a place where I could "run away from home" to. Enjoy your time at the cabin...but it sounds like you will be busy!
Sounds like you'll be extra busy the next few weeks. Hope your chicken waterer works.
Your veggies look wonderful and those plums...I'm a bit jealous. Enjoy your time at the cabin, sounds like you will be very busy.
We worry about our chickens and water too. I think I should go out now and refill the can.
Your photos are fantastic as always. The chicken watering plan sounds like a good one. I have to say that our peaches almost all had worms as well. Very disappointing. I looked locally for a spray, but couldn't find one. By the time I would have needed to mail order one, it was too late. :(
I have got to get my hubby to build me a cabin in our North 40. I really need some time away, even if it's just across the fields... :)
The float and water sounds like it will work splendidly, but I would see if I could recruit someone to swing by the place mid point of your being gone and just do a check in to be sure all is well.
Have a great time!
Beautiful garden. When you get done with your chicken waterer, would you consider doing a post on how you did it???

Well, the waterer didn't work...thank goodness I have plenty of people for back-up. I put the problem in the hands of our foreman and he thinks he can come up with something...yeah!
Nancy, just find a spot for yourself...you are so talented a studio would be perfect. I don't know how it is in your part of the country but lots of people are downsizing here and you can find *sheds* for next to nothing...some are free...just get one of those and call it *Yours*.
